North and Central Queenslanders have been urged to take care and be prepared for strong winds and heavy rain from ex-Tropical Cyclone Penny as it heads back towards the coast.
Acting Premier and Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the Bureau of Meteorology had advised that heavy rainfall and damaging winds were likely to impact areas of the tropical east coast, islands and adjacent inland.
"Queenslanders know the safety messages from previous weather events, but it is always good to remind ourselves and reinforce the need for safety," Mr Dick said.
"Check the condition of your roof, clean gutters and downpipes so water can drain away quickly, and make sure outdoor items are secure against wind gusts.
"Stay away from fallen powerlines and call the SES if you need help.
"And importantly, if it’s flooded, forget it – check the status of roads before travelling and if you do encounter a flooded area do not enter, either in a vehicle or on foot."
Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford advised the community to keep up to date with warnings from the Bureau.
"Wind and rain are an unavoidable part of summer life in Queensland, and if we are unprepared when we get hit heavily with both at once it can create emergency situations," he said.
"I am confident residents will be sensible and safe, but we must not be complacent."
