(Anuradha (Anu), Senior Case Manager, Rockhampton Community Corrections, Queensland Corrective Services)

For the past two and a half years, Anuradha (Anu) has been working with some of the most vulnerable people in our community through her work as a Senior Case Manager at Rockhampton Community Corrections.

Every day Anu case manages high-risk supervised individuals in the community with the aim to reintegrate, educate and rehabilitate them, and to increase community safety by decreasing recidivism.

Anu's background is in Law, which she studied in Sri Lanka before migrating to Australia in 2017 to undertake a postgraduate degree.

Along the way, she found QCS and was offered a position as a Senior Case Manager, which combined her passion for law, criminology and the desire to help others.

Her work with supervised individuals is integral to maintaining community safety as she assists them to understand and gain insight into their offending pathway, while motivating engagement with service providers to support their journey through the criminal justice system.

"Making decisions in accordance with various legislation, including the Corrective Services Act 2006 and Human Rights Act 2019, helps to mitigate any presenting risk to the community, ensuring Queenslanders are kept safe," Anu said.

"I respect every individual I meet and review their background, including the social and economic factors affecting them, without making judgement.

"The majority of my work involves case managing individuals with severe mental health issues, drug and alcohol addiction and significant trauma, addressing those issues and finding the most appropriate help and support for each person.

"I have found that by actively listening and encouraging small changes in someone's life, it can make a huge difference to their recovery. I have also learned to appreciate some of the wins each individual achieves, which is personally rewarding."

For those wanting to make a positive difference in someone's life, while helping to keep their community safe, Anu suggested applying to work in community corrections.

"If you are a person determined to make a difference, able to work in a team environment with a positive attitude and would like to work in a challenging and fast-paced work environment, then you most likely already have the skillset required to apply for a case manager role,." she said.

Anu enjoys flexibility in her role and the hours she works since returning from maternity leave, which helps balance her day to day life. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family, reading, travelling and watching law related documentaries and movies.
