Tallawong Breaks Ground on First New High School

NSW Gov

The Minns Labor Government is delivering more world-class public schools for fast-growing communities in Sydney's North-West, with construction now underway on the first brand new high school in Tallawong, one of the fastest growing suburbs in Sydney.

This new high school is one of 230 new and upgraded public high schools, primary schools and preschools being delivered across NSW by the Minns Labor Government - the largest single build of public educational facilities in NSW history.

The new school for families in Schofields and Tallawong will accommodate 1,000 students in more than 50 classrooms, with specialist workshops for science, food technology, wood and metal work, plus a library, a covered outdoor learning area, multipurpose hall, an aboriginal cultural learning hub, sports courts and playing fields.

On track to open Day 1 Term 1 2027, the new high school is being built on a four-hectare site at 201 Guntawong Road in Tallawong and is designed for future expansion to cater for significant growth around the Tallawong Metro Station.

This work stands in stark contrast to the Liberals record, approving thousands of new homes across the North West without building the critical school infrastructure needed by local families.

The Department's Enrolment Growth Audit found despite the Sydney North-West growth corridor having the fastest student population growth in NSW, the former Liberal National Government failed to properly predict and plan for this growth, leaving students and families without schools.

This project is among a raft of new and upgraded schools recently delivered or on the way across Sydney's North-West that will see more than 160 demountables removed and replaced with more than 700 permanent classrooms, including:

  • New high school in Tallawong
  • New high school in Jordan Springs
  • New Gables Public School and public preschool
  • New public primary school and public preschool for Grantham Farm
  • New Tallawong Public School
  • New Nirimba Fields Public School and public preschool
  • New Box Hill Public School and public preschool
  • Box Hill High School - new permanent school
  • Schofields Public School - upgrade
  • Riverbank Public School - upgrade
  • The Ponds High School - upgrade
  • Rouse Hill High School - upgrade
  • Excelsior Public School - upgrade

These projects are in addition to new and upgraded schools already delivered by the Minns Labor Government, including the new Melonba Public School and Melonba High School, and upgrades to Matthew Pearce and Castle Hill public schools.

Together, this pipeline of new and upgraded schools are an investment of more than $1.5 billion in Sydney's North-West that will provide capacity for more than 15,000 additional students in the area.

The Minns Labor Government is also working to ensure that there are more teachers in classrooms, by reducing teacher vacancies by 70 per cent in the electorate of Riverstone and 61 per cent across the state, leading to the number of merged or cancelled classes recorded in NSW nearly halving.

This is all part of the Minns Labor Government's plan to deliver better schools and more teachers to give our kids the world class education they deserve, right where they live after over a decade of neglect by the former Liberal National Government.

Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns said:

"We're the first government in decades delivering the infrastructure and the essential services communities need, all at once, as part of one plan - and now we're delivering the first new high school in the area.

"This is all part of our $1.5 billion investment in North West Sydney schools that will deliver 700 new classrooms, creating space for 15,000 additional students in the area.

"This isn't just about bricks and mortar, we're also putting more teachers in classrooms by cutting teacher vacancies, leading to a halving in the number of merged and cancelled classes in NSW since we were elected."

Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos said:

"Today marks the exciting beginning of major construction work on this much-needed high school in Tallawong. This will ensure local children in this growing area have access to a world-class public education, close to home.

"This is part of a massive investment by the Minns Labor Government to build and expand schools across Sydney's North-West after students were crammed into demountables for too long under more than a decade of Liberal and National government.

"The huge program of school infrastructure Labor is delivering for growing communities like Tallawong has been driven by Deputy Premier Prue Car.

"We are committed to properly planning and investing in quality school infrastructure, and ensuring every classroom has a qualified teacher, because rebuilding public education is Labor's priority."

Member for Riverstone, Warren Kirby said:

"I am proud to be commencing work this important project our community has long been waiting for.

"As our region continues to expand, it's vital that we keep pace by delivering the new and upgraded schools local families need.

"I know parents and students alike will welcome this milestone and look forward to seeing this new high school take shape for Schofields and Tallawong."
