Tasmania awarded top marks in WWF Renewables Scorecard

Peter Gutwein, Premier, and Guy Barnett, Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction,

Tasmania's position as the renewables powerhouse of Australia has again been confirmed by the World Wildlife Foundation in its 2021 Renewable Superpower Scorecard.

This WWF Scorecard assesses all states, territories and the Federal Government when it comes to action in the quest to position Australia as a renewable energy export superpower.

Tasmania topped the WWF Scorecard for the second year in a row due to our position of being 100 per cent powered by renewable energy, our legislated target to be 200 per cent renewable by 2040 and our strong progress on renewable hydrogen.

In the words of WWF: ''New wind farms in Tasmania took the State to net 100 per cent renewable energy in 2020. Over the last two years Tasmania has added 320 MW of new renewable generation – an average of almost 0.3 kW of new renewable generation per person per year.''

The WWF Scorecard also notes that, ''Tasmania is up there with global leaders providing more than 0.1% of GSP (Gross State Product) in funding programs to support renewable hydrogen.''

''Tasmanians can be proud of our nation, and world-leadingstatus on renewable energy, as well as our goals to produce renewable hydrogen by 2023 and be an exporter by 2030,'' Premier Peter Gutwein said.

''Tasmania is leading this energy transformation and as the nation's leading renewable energy state, we are perfectly placed to deliver what the country needs – low cost, reliable and clean energy that delivers energy security, downward pressure on prices, and much needed economic stimulus and jobs for Tasmanians,'' Premier Gutwein said.

The Tasmanian Government is also conscious of cost-of-living pressures for all Tasmanians and we are pleased that residential and business customers currently enjoy the lowest, or amongst the lowest electricity prices in the country.
