Community feedback is now open on the Commission of Inquiry (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2026, reinforcing the Tasmanian Government's commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children, young people and community.
The Bill proposes amendments to six Acts to strengthen child safety, improve accountability, and support victim-survivors.
Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, said these reforms are an important part of the Government's ongoing response to the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings and the Woolcott Review.
"Our Government is delivering for Tasmanians, taking action to keep our most vulnerable safe," the Attorney-General said.
"These changes deliver on recommendations of the COI and other reviews to enable better protection of children and young people, improve information sharing across government, and ensure strong accountability across public institutions in Tasmania.
"Significantly, this fulfils the Commission of Inquiry recommendation to provide all victims of crime with the right to seek an independent merits review of compensation decisions of Criminal Injuries Compensation Commissioners through the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal."
The draft Bill also includes key amendments to:
- Change the Child Safety Reform Implementation Monitor's legislation;
- Add Tasmania Police to the Child and Youth Safe Standards and Reportable Conduct Scheme through the Primary Act, with retrospective effect;
- Strengthen information-sharing laws to support agencies to share information about child safety risks and reportable conduct more effectively; and
- Enhance State Service integrity and discipline by strengthening the Code of Conduct, including clear obligations relating to child safety and reportable conduct, through amendments to the State Service Act 2000.
