Tas Labor

Tasmanian Labor welcomes news that salmon farming will continue in Macquarie Harbour.

Today it was announced that broad consultation will be undertaken to better understand the Maugean Skate.

We encourage all Tasmanians - including unions, workers, and the West Coast community in particular - to make submissions to ensure that our Tasmanian voice is strongly heard.

It is clear that there are many factors at play when it comes to the skate population and I am confident this review will shine a light on this.

Salmon farming is vitally important to Tasmania and there is no reason why this industry, the jobs it creates and the environment within which it operates and the skate can't all coexist.

Tasmania's salmon industry adheres to strict environmental standards and is revered around the world for its innovation and sustainability.

The salmon industry has acted quickly to start an oxygenation project in Macquarie Harbour. Other industries, who also use the harbour, are still left to take action.

Tasmanian Labor backs the salmon industry and we look forward to working with the sector and community to ensure it continues to be a pillar of our regional communities and our Tasmanian economy.
