Tasmanian Youth Orchestra creating opportunities for young Tasmanians

This evening I had the pleasure of presenting awards to a number of talented young performers at the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra’s End of Year Gala Concert.

Since it was founded in 1965, the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra has supported, embraced, and engaged with well over 1,500 young Tasmanians across the State.

This year, 180 young Tasmanians were active in the organisation’s programs, with these numbers expected to continue to grow.

With the assistance of funding from the Hodgman Liberal Government, through Arts Tasmania and the Department of Education, the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra has introduced bursaries for financially disadvantaged, choirs for those not learning instruments, and a new Northern program to extend its geographical reach across the State.

Decades of research show that music can be vitally important to young people’s well-being.

As well as providing music education, the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra’s programs instill essential life skills like team work, resilience, creativity, and self-management – all important and relevant transferable skills to today’s workforce.

The Tasmanian Youth Orchestra is giving an increasing number of Tasmanian young people the opportunity to do the very best they can through their love of music and having a positive impact on our community.
