Tasmania's best at Australian Training Awards

Sarah Courtney,Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth

The best of Tasmania's vocational education and training (VET) sector will be acknowledged as finalists in the 2021 Australian Training Awards tomorrow night.

Excitingly, this year the Awards are being hosted in Tasmania and streamed around Australia via a live broadcast where the 16 winners of the national award categories will be announced.

Tasmania is traditionally strongly represented at the awards, producing national winners like the 2020 Apprentice of the Year, Caitlin Radford and Vocational Student of the Year, Heetham Hekmat.

I'd like to recognise the significant contribution that Tasmanian industry, employers and training organisations make to building excellent skills and creating the local jobs that enhance our workforce.

Our 2021 finalists represent the range of opportunities available through vocational education and training, and what it takes to pursue exciting careers in these fields.

There are six Tasmanian finalists among the contenders for the 2021 Australian Training Awards:

*Sophie Russell - Apprentice of the Year

*Ashling Cannell- Trainee of the Year

*David Lowery - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year

*Gypsy Rose Blackberry - Vocational Student of the Year

*Sophie Furphy - School-based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year

*Roy Leurs - VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year

We congratulate them all on their extraordinary achievements so far and wish them the very best for the awards tomorrow night.
