Renowned Townsville artist and arts teacher Tate Adams' large-scale gouache paintings and prints are being celebrated with the new exhibition In Black & White at Pinnacles Gallery.
Irish-born Adams, who lived from 1922 to 2018, is well known for raising the technical practice of printmaking in Australia, teaching the first diploma of printmaking in Australia at RMIT University before moving to live in Townsville for the second half of his life.
During his time in Townsville he continued to produce art and exhibited multiple times at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, including with major solo exhibition Gesture in 2002, the curated exhibition The Line in 2007 and Elegies in 2009.
Now Adams' large-scale black gouache paintings and prints are on show for the public to see for free at Pinnacles Gallery at Riverway, exploring Adams' Irish and broader artistic heritage and incorporating his Australian environment.
Mayor Troy Thompson said Council was proud to show works from one of Townsville's best-known artists.
"Tate Adams contributed decades of his life to the betterment of the Australian arts, changing the nation's printmaking practices through his time at RMIT. He also created remarkable works while living here in Townsville, many of which have been displayed at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery," Cr Thompson said.
"Council continues to showcase local artists in Townsville's world-class visual arts facilities like Pinnacles Gallery, which makes up part of the Riverway Precinct.
"In Black & White is a remarkable exhibition and I hope our residents and visitors enjoy it just as much as I do."
In Black & White opened on Saturday with a free exhibition launch and floor talk. The exhibition runs until Sunday 7 July 2024.
