Teacher and children abused on tram - Melbourne

Melbourne North police station members are investigating a report of an assault in Melbourne on 14th March, Victoria Police say.

Police have been told a group of grade 6 children and their teacher were on the number 58 tram travelling north-bound on Williams Street at about 4pm.

A man on the tram appeared to target the children, calling out to them and speaking aggressively.

He then grabbed one of the children before and teacher stepped in.

At about 4.15pm, as the tram stopped outside the Royal Children’s Hospital, the man got up, assaulting the teacher and yelling abuse at her.

He got off the tram, forcing his way through the children by pushing them aside, whilst continuing to yell abuse at the teacher.

The man was last seen sitting at the tram stop.

The man is described as being aged in his 60s, Caucasian in appearance, 178cm tall, solid build with a large mop of dark-brown and grey hair and a very long grey beard.

At the time of the incident he was wearing black reading glasses, a purple-maroon shirt, grey cargo shorts, no shoes and carrying a very large black pack.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
