Teaching adults to cross safely

When speaking with adults about how to cross the road safely, the answers we receive can be quite varied, Queensland Police say.

Recent statistics produced by Department of Transport and Main Roads indicate that pedestrian fatalities are on the increase.

Unfortunately adults are taking dangerous risks when it comes to crossing roads and sadly sometimes with devastating results.

If you need to cross a road as a pedestrian always stop and think:

  • Is this a safe place to cross? Cross at marked crossings wherever possible. Is there somewhere better to cross, like a pedestrian crossing? If there is no crossing within 20 metres, cross by the shortest and safest route.
  • Can I be seen by drivers? Never assume a driver has seen you.
  • What is happening around me? Wearing headphones and using a mobile phone will reduce your awareness of what is happening around you.
  • Be very cautious of traffic near crests of hills and curves, if a vehicle is approaching make sure you have a safe escape available and be prepared to use it.
  • If you have been drinking alcohol, walk safely by staying on footpaths and cross at designated crossings.

Always choose the safest spot to cross.
