Teamwork saves trapped toddler

The joint efforts of Victoria Police, Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Metro, and Ambulance Victoria employees have ensured a 20-month-old girl could return home safely on Friday, Victoria Police say.

Two Protective Services Officers were patrolling Heatherdale Railway Station about 8.10pm when they spotted a distressed mother near a ramp leading up to one of the platforms.

The PSOs and their supervising sergeant took swift action once they realised the woman’s toddler had fallen about three to four metres to the ground, landing in a gap between a concrete barrier and metal fence.

Metro promptly halted train services while emergency services attended the scene.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade were investigating avenues of entry through the fence when Transit Safety Division Sergeant Simon Waterhouse located a point of access to the space from the eastern end of the platform.

Sergeant Waterhouse then crawled approximately 150m to rescue the child who had lodged herself in a small space below the gap.

She was reunited with her mother before being taken to hospital by ambulance for observation.

Sergeant Waterhouse paid a visit to the mother and toddler’s home on Saturday and reported that both are doing well.
