Nine streets in the Beenleigh CBD (pictured) will be involved in a smart parking system trial.

Work will start next week for the trial of an innovative solution to improve parking in Beenleigh.

A new smart parking system will advise drivers entering the Beenleigh CBD where parking spots are available.

The information can be accessed via a smart phone app and eventually will be displayed on electronic signage on key thoroughfares.

Small sensors and bay number plaques will be installed on 373 carpark bays in streets surrounding Beenleigh Town Square as part of a three-year trial by Logan City Council.

The installation works will occur in two stages:

  • Stage one (from Tuesday, February 23) - George St, Crete St, Kent St, James St, Victoria St
  • Stage two (August, dates to be confirmed) - Main St, City Rd, John St, York St

Economic Development Chair, Deputy Mayor Jon Raven, said the smart parking trial was another example of Council delivering on key outcomes of the 2017 Beenleigh Summit.

"No one likes driving around looking for a parking spot and this smart parking system will avoid that frustration by advising in real-time exactly where the open spots are," Cr Raven said.

Installing of the sensors will be done between 5.30am and 11am to minimise disruption to drivers and businesses.

Some parking bays will have to be closed to allow the work to be done safely.

Only one side of the street will be affected on any particular day and parking bays will be reopened once the work is completed

Division 12 Councillor Karen Murphy said the new smart parking system would enable drivers to plan their trips into Beenleigh.

"Not only will drivers know where to get a park quickly, the app also will advise how much time you can spend in that bay," Cr Murphy said.

"That will make it easier to visit Beenleigh to shop and to do business."

The project will be delivered in two stages to allow for the resurfacing of streets in the Beenleigh CBD and other streetscape upgrades.

The works are part of the $5 million Beenleigh Implementation Fund allocated to a number of projects based on community and business feedback from the Beenleigh Summit.

To download the app, search for Park Spot Guidance. Once the app is installed, enter Beenleigh in the location finder.
