Teen arrested after referee assaulted during match, NSW

A teenager has been arrested after a referee was allegedly assaulted during a rugby union match at Newcastle West today, NSW Police say.

About 5.45pm today, a referee was allegedly assaulted by a player during an under 19s rugby union grand final.

The 19-year-old referee suffered minor injuries after allegedly being struck in the jaw.

Police were contacted and officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command attended.

They were told the player involved had left the area.

Following inquiries, police attended a home at Rutherford about 10pm where they arrested an 18-year-old man.

He was taken to Maitland Police Station where he is assisting police with inquiries.
