Teenager accused of multiple break, enter and steal offences - Kingscliff

A teenage boy has been charged following multiple break, enter and steal offences on the state's Far North Coast earlier this year.

In the early hours of Sunday 24 and Monday 25 March 2019, an unknown number of people allegedly committed about 30 break, enter and steal offences in the Kingscliff and Casuarina areas.

It's alleged three vehicles - with a combined value of more than $100,000 - as well as electronic devices and wallets were taken from various locations during this time.

Detectives from Tweed/Byron Police District launched an investigation into the incidents.

About 1pm yesterday (Tuesday 30 July 2019), a 17-year-old boy was arrested at Tweed Heads Police Station.

He has been charged with nine offences, including enter dwelling with intent, steal motor vehicle, and dispose of property stolen outside NSW.

He was refused bail to face a Children's Court today (Wednesday 31 July 2019).

Inquiries are continuing.

In total, eight juveniles have now been charged in relation to break, enter and steal offences in the Kingscliff/Casuarina area from late last year and early this year. Police will allege the accused juveniles travelled from Queensland to commit the offences.

In light of the recent arrests, Tweed/Byron Police District is reminding residents to secure their property and vehicles, even while in and around the home.

Tweed/Byron Police Crime Manager, Detective Chief Inspector Brendon Cullen, said always ensure doors are locked, keys are kept in a safe place and personal belongings are never left in view when you leave your car.

"Stealing from a car is usually an opportunistic crime, so leaving your valuables in open view or poor vehicle security can invite unwanted attention. Always make sure your vehicle is locked and windows are up when you leave the car.

"By just taking a few extra security precautions, you can significantly lower your chances of being affected by this type of crime." Det Chief Insp Cullen said.

Tips to ensure home and car safety and security include:

  • Fit quality security doors, windows, locks, alarms, lighting and warning signs.
  • Secure all windows and doors.
  • If you have one, activate your alarm and ensure security lighting is positioned effectively.
  • Lock your gates, sheds and garages.
  • When away from home, use a timer to activate an internal light or radio to give the impression someone is home.
  • Never leave your keys in the ignition when not in your car; even in your driveway at home.
  • Always keep your car's doors and windows locked, including when driving
  • Consider upgrading your car's security with a quality alarm or for older vehicles an electronic immobiliser.
  • Never leave your keys in plain view either at home or in public places such as restaurants.
  • Always try to park in a well-lit or populated area.
  • Tradies – always lock your toolboxes and ute trays and try to avoid parking on the street at night.
