Teenager arrested after crashing into shop - Charlestown

A teenage boy has been arrested after allegedly riding an unregistered motorbike on the footpath near pedestrians at Gateshead before crashing into a Charlestown shop.

About 8.50am yesterday (Wednesday 24 May 2023), police were called to the Pacific Highway at Gateshead following reports pedestrians were required to move out of the way of a motorbike riding on the footpath.

Police from Lake Macquarie Police District were assisted by Operation Utah police and Raptor North Traffic & Highway Patrol in a search for the rider, and at 10.15am (Wednesday 24 May 2023), police sighted the motorbike allegedly riding dangerously amongst pedestrians on the footpath along the Pacific Highway, Charlestown.

A short time later police apprehend the rider who came to a stop after crashing into the counter of a sporting goods store on the Pacific Highway at Charlestown.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested at the scene before being taken to Charlestown Police Station where he was charged with six offences including drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, use unregistered motor vehicle, unlicensed driver, and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before a Children's Court on Monday 10 July 2023.
