Telecommunication cables damaged by fire in Taree

A 12-year-old boy has been arrested following an incident where underground telecommunication cables were damaged in the state’s north coast.

About 6.30pm yesterday, emergency services were called to a fire at an underground telecommunications pit at Purfleet near Taree.

The fire was extinguished by NSW Fire & Rescue officers.

Police established a crime scene and the fire appeared to be suspicious.

The damage to the cables caused major disruption to the telecommunication network on the northern coast of New South Wales.

Following an investigation by officers attached to Manning/Great Lakes, a 12-year-old boy was arrested.

The juvenile will be dealt with under the young offenders Act.
