Retailers across South Australia are bracing for a 'Black Friday' sales bonanza today, with tens of thousands of shoppers expected to turn out and take advantage of the historic extended shop trading hours in the lead up to Christmas, supporting local jobs and the economy.
In a South Australian first, Treasurer Rob Lucas has granted a special Ministerial exemption for all stores to be able to open until midnight today, Black Friday - if they choose.
Rundle Mall and Westfield Marion are opening until midnight - with many major retailers, including David Jones, Myer, MECCA and Nike among those taking part in the late-night trade - while Westfield West Lakes and Tea Tree Plaza are capitalising on the increased consumer demand by extending their trade beyond their usual 5:30pm close to 9pm.
Treasurer Lucas said extended shop trading for Black Friday sales would support local jobs and boost the economy.
"The Marshall Liberal Government is focussed on growing the economy and creating local jobs and we are delighted that so many South Australian retailers are embracing extended trade today," said Mr Lucas.
"In doing so, they are giving thousands of local retail workers the opportunity to work additional hours and earn more in the lead up to Christmas if they'd like to. By supporting South Australia's bricks and mortar businesses respond to growing consumer demand, we help grow the economy.
"Black Friday also coincides with the first day of the day/night Test match at Adelaide Oval, so city retailers will be able to capitalise on the influx of thousands of interstate and international visitors here for the cricket."
The worldwide Black Friday phenomenon - regarded as the 'unofficial' start of the Christmas trading season - has grown in popularity in SA.
Last year it was the second busiest trading day, after Boxing Day, on Rundle Mall's calendar in terms of foot traffic.
