Territory Fishers Reel in New Opportunities

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is once again putting bigger funding on the line for Territory fishos and the lifestyle they love, with Round 2 of the 2025 Northern Territory Recreational Fishing Grants Scheme (NTRFGS) now open.

Minister for Recreational Fishing Gerard Maley said the latest round offers grants of up to $75,000 to support larger-scale not-for-profit projects that create new fishing opportunities, improve infrastructure, and help reel in the Territory's unique lifestyle.

"This program is about backing fishing clubs, organisations and community groups who want to deliver new opportunities and improve access to our world-class fishing," Mr Maley said.

"By supporting strategic projects that benefit locals and attract visitors, these grants strengthen recreational fishing, an industry that already injects $144 million into the Territory economy each year. It's another example of our year of action, certainty and security delivering real outcomes for Territorians."

Funding priorities for Round 2 include projects that:

Support the sustainability of at-risk inshore reef species like Golden Snapper,Deliver high-level financial or in-kind contributions,Developed in partnership with other organisations, andProvide benefit to regional and remote communities.

Mr Maley said the grants are another way the CLP Government is delivering on its commitment to restore the Territory lifestyle, backed by the Restoring the Territory Lifestyle Strategy herereleased today.

"We promised Territorians we'd restore the Territory lifestyle - and this new strategy sets out a clear plan to do just that. It focuses on five key priorities to make the Territory lifestyle the envy of the nation.

"That's why the strategy is centred on five priorities: number one for nature, celebrating community and connection, delivering better infrastructure for an active Territory, improving affordability in the Territory and helping Territorians be happier and healthier.

Mr Maley said fishing is a perfect example of what the strategy is all about.

"Fishing is a big part of our lifestyle. It brings families and communities together, and it drives local tourism," he said.

"I encourage our fishing clubs, fishing organisations, and other not-for-profits to apply for this funding and help deliver new projects that create new recreational fishing opportunities."

Round 1 of the 2025 NTRFGS awarded just over $99,000 to deliver nine community projects including kids' fishing fun days, programs for seniors, and opportunities for young Territorians with disabilities.

Since it began in 2018, the NTRFGS has provided $1.26 million in funding to a wide range of projects that improve recreational fishing and support sustainable growth of the sector.

Round 2 of the 2025 program is now open, and closes Sunday, 5 October 2025.
