Testing capacity questions must be answered

Tasmanian Labor

With the Health Minister today saying that Tasmanians can expect 2000 cases of COVID a day, questions around the capacity of testing clinics must be answered.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said that everyday Labor is hearing stories from people that have been turned away from testing sites.

"The government have had months to prepare for when we reopened the borders and repeatedly said our health system is ready," Ms White said.

"Since Christmas on average there have been just 2,067 tests undertaken* each day.

"What assurance can the Health Minister provide that Tasmania will ever be able to reach 5,000 tests a day as he promised in December?

"Without an increase in testing capacity the Health Minister is predicting there will be more cases than daily tests based on the current testing figures.

"The government needs to urgently resource testing clinics so they can cope with this increased demand."
