The weight is over with Tambo's refurbished gym

The residents of Tambo have a new place to work-out with the official opening of the refurbished Tambo Sports Clubhouse and Gymnasium.

Officially opening the facility, Minister for local Government Stirling Hinchliffe said the rebuilt clubhouse supports jobs growth, the economy and the health of the locals.

"The old sport centre had serviced the community well but it was time it was replaced with a new facility," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"This begins a new era in the health and wellbeing for the people of Tambo and surrounding areas.

"The Palaszczuk Government is proud to have provided $212,400 from the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP) towards the $500,000 project.

"I am pleased to say the clubhouse supported five full time jobs during construction and another two positions ongoing to run the centre".

The new sports clubhouse and gymnasium comprises larger workout and exercise spaces to cater for the increased numbers of exercise groups and gym users, children’s area and safe play space, a canteen and air-conditioning as well as showers and changerooms, including disabled facilities.

Blackall-Tambo Regional Council Mayor Andrew Martin said the community and the Tambo Sports Club members had a large say in the design of the centre.

"The message we received loud and clear was the need for a larger facility and Improved access in peak times," Mayor Martin said.

"Given the current focus on mental health issues particularly associated with the continued drought it has been proven by many that it is most important to get out, get active and get connected with your community. This excellent facility ticks all those boxes for which we are eternally grateful.

"I want to thank the Queensland Government for its support in helping build the sports clubhouse and gym.

"I am excited to see how this new facility in the sport and recreation precinct will help support the growing exercise industry locally."

The Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program supports local governments to deliver infrastructure which is designed to create jobs and contribute to building safe, caring and connected communities.
