Thornton School Upgrade Concept Designs Unveiled

NSW Gov

The Minns Labor Government is continuing to deliver world-class educational facilities for regional communities with designs for a multi-million-dollar upgrade for Thornton Public School to be shared with the community.

Maitland families will have a first look at the concept designs for the upgrade of Thornton Public School at a community information session from 2:30pm to 6pm today, Tuesday 2 December.

The designs showcase a new state-of-the-art building featuring 16 modern classrooms, three specialist support classrooms, a new library, amenities, and a new covered outdoor learning area.

Once complete in 2028, the upgrade will double the school's capacity and replace demountables and ageing buildings with permanent, modern facilities.

The planning application for the project will be exhibited on the NSW Planning Portal early next year, giving the community a chance to view the plans and provide feedback.

The project forms part of the Minns Labor Government's wider investment in educational infrastructure in the Hunter, including new high schools in Huntlee and Medowie, and a full redevelopment of Gillieston Public School.

As part of its plan to rebuild public education, the Minns Labor Government's is delivering $2.1 billion for new and upgraded schools in regional NSW. This targeted investment will ensure growing communities get access to a world class public education, close to home.

In addition to building new schools where they are needed, the Minns Labor Government's work to rebuild public education includes ensuring each NSW classroom has a qualified teacher.

Since March 2023, the Minns Labor Government has reduced teacher vacancies by 61 per cent across the state, leading to the number of cancelled classes in NSW nearly halving.
