Thousands of South Australian households missing out on energy bill savings

The Liberal Government is urging around 120,000 South Australian households to take advantage of the current energy discount offer which could result in savings of up to $585 off annual energy bills.

A total of 1600 households joined the existing 50,000 customers who have signed up to the discounted energy deal with Origin since the State Government increased its SA Concessions Energy Discount offer from 18 to 20 per cent in April.

Premier Steven Marshall urged eligible South Australian households to take advantage of the energy discount offer.

"Up to 120,000 South Australian households could be benefiting from the State Government's energy discount offer and I urge people to take advantage of this deal," said Premier Marshall.

"Thousands of South Australian households struggle to pay high utility costs and that is why the Liberal Government re-negotiated a better deal from an 18 to 20 per cent discount to help people who need it most.

"The Liberal Government is committed to delivering more affordable electricity for South Australians to ensure the community have cheaper and more reliable power into the future."

Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink urged eligible low-income households to take up the deal.

"We know that cost of living expenses and energy bills are one of the biggest concerns for South Australian households and with the official start to winter, people are switching on their heaters to stay warm," said Minister Lensink.

"The State Government energy concessions offer provides some much-needed dollars back into South Australian households through discounts on not only usage, but also the supply charges of electricity and gas.

"This discount is quite unique - many providers will offer some discount on usage, but it's very rare to receive assistance for supply charges too.

"The offer also boasts a range of other benefits, such as no late payment penalties and flexible payment options, which can really assist those South Australians who need a helping hand."

Minister Lensink said eligible households should review their current energy deal, to learn if the deal with Origin Energy would result in saving more money off their total energy bill.

"Households who take up the offer will also benefit from an 11 per cent discount on their gas usage and supply charges from Origin too," said Minister Lensink.

Eligible households include those who hold particular concession cards or receive Centrelink payments such as Newstart Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY, and the Parenting Payment.

On top of this energy discount deal, the State Government offers eligible, low-income households an additional energy concession.

Currently, more than 180,000 households are receiving up to $223 toward their home's energy bills. From 1 July 2019, the energy concession will be increased to $226.67.

The State Government also offers eligible households the annual Cost of Living Concession to help with expenses like energy, gas, water and medical bills.

The concession was $207.30 for homeowners and $103.70 for tenants in 2018-19. This concession will increase for the 2019-20 financial year, to $210.70 and $105.40 respectively.
