Three More Victorian Schools Hit by Labor's Schools Tax

Liberal Party Victoria

The cost for families educating a child at the school of their choice continues to grow as the Allan Labor Government's insidious Schools Tax hits three more schools.

Alphington Grammar, Deutsche Schule Melbourne and Luther College are the latest schools to be subjected to this unfair tax from 1 July - increasing the total number of schools on Labor's Schools Tax hit list to 61.

Since its introduction in the 2023-24 State Budget, Labor's Schools Tax has in some cases added more than $1000 a year to the cost of educating a child at a non-government school.

The continued growth of the Allan Labor Government's Schools Tax comes as Victoria's net debt is set to reach a record $194 billion by 2028-29, and interest repayments are set to exceed $1.2 million an hour.

More than two thirds of the schools hit by Labor's Schools Tax are now paying more in payroll tax to the Allan Labor Government than they are receiving in recurrent funding obligations under the Schooling Resource Standard (SRS) - essentially paying the state government to educate Victorian students.

Shadow Minister for Education, Jess Wilson, said: "Year after year, Labor's insidious Schools Tax continues to make life harder for more students, families and school communities.

"Even specialist schools such as Rossbourne are in danger of being hit with this tax - denying students with learning difficulties the tailored education they need and deserve.

"This is an unjust tax on educational choice and aspiration and only a future Liberals and Nationals Government will repeal it.

"Labor cannot manage money and Victorian families and schools are paying the price."
