The Labour Day long weekend has commenced with three pedestrians killed in separate road-related incidents across NSW yesterday.
About 6.15pm (Friday 30 September 2022), emergency services were called to Sunflower Drive, near Gipps Street, Claremont Meadows, after reports a man had been struck by a Daihatsu sedan.
The 80-year-old man was treated at the scene by witnesses and NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, could not be revived.
The driver of the sedan – a 24-year-old man – was taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory testing.
Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.
Just before 7pm (Friday 30 September 2022), emergency services were called to Castlereagh Road, near Hinxman Road, Penrith, after reports a man had been struck by a Mazda BT-50 utility.
The 32-year-old man was treated at the scene by witnesses, police and NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, could not be revived.
The driver of the utility – a 43-year-old man – was taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory testing.
Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced and investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In regional NSW, emergency services were called to the Barton Highway, Murrumbateman, just after 6.30pm (Friday 30 September 2022), after reports a woman had been struck by a Mitsubishi Triton utility.
The 83-year-old was treated at the scene by witnesses; however, could not be revived.
The driver of the utility – a 25-year-old man – was taken to Yass District Hospital for mandatory testing.
Officers from The Hume Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Trent King, said this is a very concerning way to commence the long weekend.
"Long weekends are a time for families and friends to spend together, not be told that their loved one has been killed in an incident on our roads," Acting Assistant Commissioner King said.
"I implore both road users and pedestrians to stay alert, pay attention and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
"The predicted weather for the weekend requires additional caution to be taken, so please drive with care, for the sake of all road users".
Reports will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
