Australian boxing superstar and Super Welterweight World Title contender Tim Tszyu will challenge for the interim world title in Sydney next month in a knock-out sporting event secured by the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government.
Tszyu, son of legendary former light middleweight world champion Kostya Tszyu, will face off against former world champion, American Tony Harrison at Qudos Bank Arena on Sunday 12 March.
Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government is partnering with No Limit Boxing and Total Sport and Entertainment to bring the highly anticipated world title bout to Sydney, adding to the state's extensive sporting events calendar in 2023.
"Tim Tszyu was born and raised in Sydney, so where better to stake his claim for a world title than here on his local turf, in front of a home crowd, with the world watching on," Mr Henskens said.
"World title bouts are broadcast internationally and will showcase NSW as the leading sports state of Australia and a city that punches above its weight to produce unforgettable sporting moments.
"We are committed to supporting a diverse range of sporting endeavours from grassroots to elite levels, to inspire future Olympic and world champions.
"Our 10 World Cups in 10 Years initiative has already demonstrated our capability to draw record-breaking crowds to NSW - now we have the world's best boxers on their way to make their mark on Sydney."
Tim Tszyu said he was excited to return to Sydney for this milestone fight.
"It's incredible to be fighting for my very first world title in my hometown of Sydney," Mr Tszyu said.
"Sydney is my home, it's the place that made me who I am and I can't wait to create history here. It's going to be absolutely electric. I have 1 date, 1 time and 1 name on my mind and that's Tony Harrison. He's standing in front of everything I have ever worked for and I will stop at nothing to make sure that belt stays right here in Sydney where it belongs."
Harrison is currently ranked number 2 by the World Boxing Council and number 4 by the World Boxing Organisation in super welterweight. His career record includes 29 wins, 3 losses and a draw - 21 of those wins were by knockout.
The Tim Tszyu vs Tony Harrison WBO Interim Super Welterweight World Title Fight will be held on Sunday 12 March at Qudos Bank Arena. Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday 10 February 2023 via Ticketek.
