· Money for roundabout fix must be in May Budget
· Community wants to see safety improvements at notorious roundabout
· Liberals must listen after hundreds sign petition calling for action
The Hodgman Government must listen to the people and act on the Mornington Roundabout in the coming State Budget, Labor Member for Pembroke Jo Siejka said.
Since coming to office, Ms Sijeka has collected hundreds of signatures from local residents calling for action to make the dangerous roundabout safe.
“I know from my own experiences it is a dangerous and confusing roundabout but I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people who want to see improvements at the Mornington Roundabout,” Ms Siejka said.
“People who use this intersection are telling us of countless near misses, accidents and other horror stories of people trying to navigate the intersection.
“There’s been no long-term planning, which has added to the chaos caused by changes to bus services.
“After substantial pressure from the community and Tasmanian Labor, the Minister announced a review into the intersection late last year. Now the people of Pembroke and the Eastern Shore need action.
“In the long term I am sure that there are vast improvements that can be made to the Mornington Roundabout but there are steps the Government can take immediately to improve safety without having to undertake massive roadworks.
“One thing the Government could be doing immediately is working towards safer access for pedestrians.
“In the longer-term the Minister needs to be outlining what will be done to make the roundabout safer and easier to use.
“I urge the Minister to lobby for money to fix the Mornington Roundabout to be included in the May Budget.
“Labor will continue to keep up the pressure on behalf of Tasmanians let down by the Liberals’ lack of investment and planning.”
