TLDMG to continue monitoring rain event

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group met this afternoon and will continue to monitor the rain event and provide updates to the community.

Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) Chair Mayor Jenny Hill said the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting heavy rain is likely to continue for the next few days.

"We've already had a lot of rain over all areas of Townsville but residents should be prepared for more heavy falls," Cr Hill said.

"The TLDMG will continue to monitor the situation closely and update the community with any relevant information."

Cr Hill said the TLDMG will meet again tomorrow at 9am to analyse the latest weather predictions.

"All agencies in the TLDMG are working together to ensure we have an appropriate response to this major rain event," Cr Hill.

"As the latest information becomes available we will be tailoring our response to meet the situation."

Cr Hill asked residents to please stay safe in the wet weather.

"If you have to drive, please drive to the conditions – and if it's flooded, forget it," Cr Hill said.

"Parents should not be letting their children playing in floodwaters, particularly around the city's weirs.

"There's potentially dangerous animals, hidden hazards and a huge amount of water flowing through our river systems at the moment."
