Under the Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) Initiative East Africa project, the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has been providing strong technical support to several neighbouring countries.
In Burundi, the Institut Géographique du Burundi (IGEBU) is expected to receive support, including assistance with the installation of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, as well as training on Severe Weather Forecasting Programme (SWFP) and in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP). Progress has also been made in the implementation of the Quality Management System (QMS) with the guidance of TMA. Further training activities, along with QMS audit and evaluation, are planned.
This solid partnership and commitment among National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) is showcased in a video prepared by TMA, which highlights the ongoing initiatives supporting IGEBU under the CREWS East Africa project. The video places special focus on best practices, lessons learned, and the value of regional collaboration in strengthening QMS for NMHSs in the region.
The success of this assistance has demonstrated the value of South-South cooperation. It also underscores the importance of effective coordination through the CREWS Initiative and the WMO Regional Office for Africa, alongside the strong partnership and commitment of IGEBU and TMA.
