Too much Christmas spirit

A P-plate driver will face a string of charges after being caught driving at nearly five times the legal limit in Toorak on Christmas Eve.

Prahran Highway Patrol members noticed a vehicle allegedly swerving across lanes while travelling at 104km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Monash Freeway about 8.45am.

The 26-year-old male driver was breath-tested, returning an alleged reading of .242.

He then refused to take a drug test.

The Dandenong man was arrested for possessing a small amount of methylamphetamine.

He is expected to be charged on summons with speeding, drink driving, driving while impaired, refusing a drug test, drug possession, fail to stay in marked lanes and fail to have control of a motor vehicle.

Police impounded his car for 30 days at the cost of $878.50.

His licence was also immediately suspended for 12 months.

This impound forms part of Operation Roadwise, a state-wide road policing operation during the high-risk Christmas period.

Police are targeting impaired driving, speed, distraction, and fatigue in high-risk areas throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Operation Roadwise runs until 11.59pm on Sunday, 26 December.
