State Emergency Service (SES) honoured eight dedicated volunteers and two units at their annual SES Regional Award Ceremony in Townsville last Friday.
The awards recognise the outstanding contributions of members who go above or beyond the normal course of duties.
Sixty-nine-year-old Stephen Weise, from Gregory/Lawn Hills who has been an SES volunteer for more than two years, was awarded the prestigious Regional Member of the Year award for his overall distinguished service throughout 2024.
Also recognised were Dori Westwood, Ian Cameron, Ivan Bates, Madison Marshall and Rose Carney, who were presented with Regional Achievement Awards.

Other award winners included Nicole Bradley, receiving the Trainer of the Year Award, while Charters Towers Unit received the Operational Response of the Year Award and Burketown received the Unit/Group of the Year Award.
Notably, Micah Graffin from Townsville received the Young Member of the Year Award for his dedication during Tropical Cyclone Kirrily in January and February of 2024, when he was only 16 years old.

Acting Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy said SES volunteers exemplified the spirit of selfless service, who consistently stepped up in times of crisis to protect and support their communities.
"The contributions SES members make to Queenslanders is invaluable to the safety and resilience of our state," Acting Commissioner Chelepy said.
"Their recognition tonight reflects the deep appreciation we all share for their efforts.
"I sincerely congratulate each and every one of them - their dedication has truly enhanced our ability to respond effectively in disasters and emergencies."
Northern Region SES Director, Mr Daryl Camp ESM, said these awards recognised the outstanding contributions made by volunteers, units and community members.
"These awards are a thank you to our volunteers who regularly risk their lives to protect or assist the community in times of emergency," Mr Camp said
"They reflect the remarkable work of our members and serve as an important reminder of their dedication and upholding the values of SES.
"They should be proud of their achievements, and I offer my sincere congratulations."
Winners of the Northern Region awards are automatically nominated for the respective state awards and select winners will travel to Brisbane for the ceremony on 23 August 2025.
