Train is on its way to Darwin

NT Government

Good news for Territorians and visitors, the railway track has re-opened under restrictions and the first freight service passed through Tennant Creek this morning and is expected to be in Darwin this evening.

The backlog of freight in Alice Springs has now been cleared with further stocks and supplies in Adelaide to be freighted during the week.

The infrastructure team at Aurizon has made great progress with the repair work, and the damaged 2.5km section of the line has now been completed.

Regional Controller, Assistant Commissioner Matt Hollamby APM said, "I want to take this opportunity to thank the team from Aurizon for mobilising so quickly to repair the track.

"There has been some amazing work achieved by the team in trying conditions.

"I also want to thank everyone in Darwin, Katherine and in between, for their patience as stock levels have been gradually returning to supermarkets and stores.

"Also a reminder that our wet season weather is not over and for everyone to ensure they have a well-stocked emergency kit."
