Transition to new bin colours

The Victorian Government has introduced new legislation which requires all councils to use consistent bin colours across the state by 2030.

In Boroondara, this means changing the colour of our current household waste and recycling bins to meet the new standards:

  • household waste bins will have dark green bodies with red lids
  • recycling bins will have dark green bodies with yellow lids
  • FOGO bins will stay the same, with dark green bodies and lime green lids.

From this month, we started a progressive transition to the new standard bin colours. This progressive transition involves:

  • replacing only lost, broken or end-of-life household waste and recycling bins with the new standard coloured bins (we will continue to recycle these old bins which are replaced)
  • providing new standard coloured bins when you order a household waste or recycling bin for your property for the first time, or change your bin size.

A bulk changeover for all remaining household waste and recycling bins will happen closer to the 2030 cut-off date to ensure bins that are in otherwise good condition don't go to waste.

While there will be different coloured household waste and recycling bins around Boroondara for some time, please use your bins in the same way. There are no changes to the current service or items currently accepted in each bin.
