Transparency Triumphs in WorkCover Inquiry Win for Reform

Liberal Party Victoria

The Victorian Upper House has supported a motion by the Liberals and Nationals to conduct an inquiry into the Allan Government's flawed WorkCover legislation.

The motion to refer the flawed bill to the Economy and Infrastructure Committee for an inquiry was supported 23-17 in a vote of members of the Legislative Council.

The committee will now consider in detail the reforms required to fix WorkCover, which the Allan Government has admitted is on the brink of "collapse". The committee will engage with key stakeholders and report back to the Parliament by 6 February 2023.

Leader of the Opposition, John Pesutto, said: "The Liberals and Nationals welcome the support of the Parliament for proper transparency and scrutiny to get these important reforms right.

"Today, the Parliament has backed the Liberals and Nationals to deliver a fairer and more sustainable WorkCover scheme that supports workers and is affordable for businesses."

Shadow Minister for WorkCover, Cindy McLeish, said: "By Labor's own admission, WorkCover is broken and this referral is an important step to ensure Victorians can have confidence in their WorkCover scheme.

"This short, sharp inquiry will ensure stakeholders are properly consulted and the fundamental flaws in Labor's WorkCover Bill are resolved."
