The Crisafulli Government is powering ahead with its commitment to deliver CopperString, as Treasurer and Energy Minister David Janetzki travels the corridor from Townsville to Mount Isa to meet local mayors and industry groups.
The Crisafulli Government has saved the biggest energy project in North Queensland's history – despite years of neglect and eye-watering cost blowouts under the former Labor Government – and recently locked in a record $2.4 billion for CopperString in the Budget.
The Treasurer will this week visit key sites along the corridor including the Hughenden home of CopperString's workers.
The workforce accommodation facility is on track to be fully operational by September, with construction of the $225 million Hughenden Hub due to start later this financial year, pending approvals.
Communities in North and North West Queensland are already seeing the benefits of the Crisafulli Government's record investment in CopperString with more than $17 million invested into local businesses and the launch of Powerlink's $30 million community legacy fund.
Treasurer and Minister for Energy David Janetzki said the regional tour was an opportunity to discuss CopperString directly with local leaders and to provide them with much-needed certainty.
"Councils and stakeholders were left in the dark and let down by the former Labor Government's neglect and appalling handling of this project," Mr Janetzki said.
"We're committed to working in lockstep with local communities in a calm and methodical way, to ensure we're delivering the best project for the North and North West.
"The approaching completion of the Hughenden workforce accommodation is a major milestone on the road to connecting energy projects to the National Electricity Market and unlocking the full value of the North West Minerals Province and serves as an example of our Government's commitment.
"Powerlink and Queensland Investment Corporation's combined expertise will ensure the project is delivered efficiently and provide value for Queenslanders."
