Tree inspections at Royal Park

The following statement is attributable to City of Melbourne Chief Executive Officer, Justin Hanney:

The City of Melbourne continues to work closely with authorities to assist in investigating the fatal incident that occurred at Princes Park this morning.

Arborists began re-inspecting the row of trees on Royal Parade for safety today, which were last inspected on 12 July 2019 as part of the annual inspections we conduct on trees throughout the municipality.

The City of Melbourne inspects trees in heavy-traffic locations such as boulevards and parks annually. All other trees are inspected on a biennial basis at a minimum.

The inspection last month did not highlight any signs the tree posed an increased public safety risk.

If a tree poses an immediate risk it will be removed.

We remove approximately 800 trees per year for a range of reasons including risk across the municipality.
