Two arrested after elderly woman assaulted, South Australia

A teenager and a man have been arrested after an alleged assault and theft of a car from Coober Pedy this morning.

Just before 5.30am on Tuesday 18 December police received a report an 81-year-old woman had been assaulted and her car stolen from her Hillman Road home.

The victim awoke to a noise and when she investigated she was threatened and assaulted several times by two men who hit her in the head with a piece of wood.

The suspects forced the victim to hand over her car keys and then stole her white Holden Commodore sedan.

The victim sought assistance from a neighbour and was immediately taken to the Coober Pedy hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

About 30 minutes later the vehicle was sighted at a service station on Hutchinson Street. Police will allege the passenger filled the vehicle up with fuel and left without paying.

Just after 10am the same day a truck driver sighted the stolen vehicle on Stuart Highway, approximately 50km south of Coober Pedy. The driver and passenger were seen walking away from the vehicle.

Coober Pedy patrol officers attended Stuart Highway where they located the suspects who were arrested without incident. A 17-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man both from Coober Pedy were charged with aggravated robbery and theft of a motor vehicle. They were both refused bail and will appear in the Coober Pedy Magistrates Court on Wednesday 19 December.
