Two arrested following assault, confrontation with police in Campbelltown

A man and woman have been charged, following an assault and subsequent confrontation with police in Campbelltown on Sunday, NSW Police say.

About 1.30pm (24 April 2016), police were called to a shopping centre on Queen Street, Campbelltown, following reports of an assault.

Initial investigations suggest two women became involved in an altercation with another woman, before one of the women pushed her to the ground. She fled after being pushed.

Police attended and while speaking with the two women, a man known to them approached officers allegedly armed with a sword.

Officers arrested the man following a short struggle and seized the sword.

Police will allege that during the struggle one of the women assaulted police. She was also arrested.

The man and woman, both aged 25, were taken to Campbelltown Police Station.

The man was charged with carry weapon in public place, assault police, and resist arrest. He was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Bail Court yesterday where he was again refused bail and is due to appear at Campbelltown Local Court today.

The woman was charged with affray, assault police, and hinder police. She was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on 23 May 2016.

Police from Campbelltown Local Area Command are investigating the incident and investigating reports that the initial incident was racially motivated.
