Two charged after assault, inquiries continue in Leeton

Police have charged a man and a woman following an alleged assault in the Riverina region yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 3.20am yesterday, a 41-year-old man and 39-year-old woman who reside at a motel on Wade Avenue, Leeton, were woken by yelling.

The pair went outside to investigate and they were allegedly assaulted by a group of five people.

Police will allege the woman was dragged across the road and further assaulted; when the man attempted to intervene and was allegedly stabbed.

The group fled the scene and emergency services were contacted.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man and the woman at the scene before the man was taken to Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital and the woman was taken to Leeton Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Officers from Griffith Local Area Command attended and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, about 4.40pm yesterday, a 32-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were arrested on the corner of McCudden and Marcus Streets, Griffith.

They were taken to Griffith Police Station where the woman was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others, and affray.

The man was charged with reckless wounding in company, assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others, and affray.

They were both refused bail to appear at Griffith Local Court today.

Inquiries are continuing.
