Two Charged After Officer Assaulted in Broadway Brawl

Two people have been charged after a police officer was assaulted during a brawl at a hotel in Broadway, in the Sydney CBD.

About 5.40pm yesterday (Sunday 31 August 2025), officers from Sydney City Police Area Command were called to a hotel on Broadway, following reports of a group of people at the bar who were yelling offensively at passersby before a brawl ensued.

Police arrived and attempted to disperse the group.

It will be alleged that a 48-year-old man assaulted a male constable.

When the constable attempted to arrest the man, it will be further alleged that a 29-year-old man also assaulted the officer.

Capsicum spray was deployed where both men ran from the scene but were each arrested after a short foot pursuit.

The younger man was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and the other man to Day Street Police Station.

The men were charged with affray, assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

They have been refused bail to appear at Bail Division – Court 7, Local, later today (Monday 1 September 2025).

The officer suffered minor injuries.
