Byron Shire residents are now eligible for two free waste drop-offs at the Byron Resource Recovery Centre every year.

This means people can take up to 150kg of general waste or up to 500kg of garden waste to the facility per drop off. Payment will be needed for waste over the allocated weight limit.

"We are very excited to offer this additional service to our residents so they can dispose of their waste correctly when they are moving or doing a clean-up around the house," Zoe White, Council's Waste and Education Compliance Officer, said.

"In the past we have only offered one free drop-off a year and we're hoping that this extra service will reduce the amount of waste people are leaving on footpaths or dumping in the bush or on the side of the road," she said.

"Our message to everyone is that sending waste to landfill should be the last option.

"Items in good condition can be dropped at the secondhand shop at the BRRC or failing that we are encouraging people to find another home, repair or repurpose items where possible," Ms White said.

In addition to the extra drop-off service, we also have a free courtesy trailer available to people to make it easier and cheaper for people to bring it to the BBRC.

The trailer can also be used to transport purchases from the Second Hand Shop, or mulch.

"These initiatives have been brought in to make it easier for people to dispose of unwanted items with the end result being we have less rubbish on the streets and more items recycled and reused," Ms White said.

"There are also a wide range of items that can be disposed of for free at the BBRC including electronic waste, and problem items such as gas bottles, paint and oil," she said.

People wanting to take advantage of the free waste drop-offs should bring a copy of their rates notices to the BBRC or tenants can fill out a Bulk Waste Disposal Tenant form on Council's website.

More information including how to make a trailer booking is on Council's website or people can call the Resource Recovery Hotline on 1300 652 625.
