Two killed in crash on Pacific Highway in Maclean

Two people have died and another three were injured following a crash on the North Coast this afternoon, NSW Police say.

Just after 4.15pm today (Monday 11 December 2017), emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway just south of Maclean after reports of a head-on collision between two cars.

A 78-year-old man and his 72-year-old female passenger in a northbound hatchback died at the scene.

The occupants of a southbound station wagon suffered serious injuries, including a 40-year-old woman in the rear seat who was airlifted to a Gold Coast hospital in a critical condition and two men in the front seats who were taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to Lismore Base Hospital.

The highway has been closed for some hours while officers from Coffs/Clarence Local Area Command examine the scene, but is expected to reopen soon.

Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are continuing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
