Two men in court after police officer punched in face - Sydenham

Two men have been charged after a police officer was allegedly punched in the face in Sydney's Inner West last night.

About 10.45pm (Saturday 27 February 2021), officers from Inner West Police Area Command were called to Swain Street, Sydenham, following reports of an affray involving five males.

When police arrived and tried to separate the males, a 21-year-old man attempted to punch officers.

OC spray was deployed, and he was arrested.

The other males were issued move on directions.

Shortly after, a 33-year-old man exited a licensed venue after being asked to leave by security.

It's alleged he re-entered the venue and when police approached and attempted to stop him, a male constable was pushed, and a male senior constable was punched in the face.

Following a struggle, officers were able to arrest the man and additional resources were called to the scene.

The officer was treated at the scene before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment of a double facial fracture. He has since been released.

The men, both from Tempe, were taken to Newtown Police Station.

The older man was charged with cause grievous bodily harm to police officer on duty, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty and excluded person re-enter premises.

The younger man was charged with two counts of assault police officer in execution of duty, resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty and common assault.

They were both refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Sunday 28 February 2021).
