Two more $2000 brown trout caught as part of Tagged Trout Promotion

Tasmanian anglers have had a successful week on inland waters with another two tagged brown trout caught worth $2,000 each.

Rex Meikle, from George Town, caught one of the trout at Lake Leake on Tuesday 24 August, and brothers Len and Hilton Howard, from Risdon Vale, caught another the following day at Craigbourne Dam.

Brothers Len (aged 82) and Hilton (68) enjoy their time fishing together and went to Craigbourne Dam on the word that the fish were biting. They launched their boat and were trolling lures around the lake when Len hooked the fish and Hilton helped him net it with the pair spotting the orange tag.

The fish has been confirmed as one of the two tagged trout released into Craigbourne Dam and the brothers plan to share the prize money for a trip together.

Rex Meikle, who regularly fishes at Lake Leake and owns a shack there, was fishing from a boat on Tuesday this week at Lake Leake with his friend when he hooked the tagged trout using a Wooley Bugger fly.

As Rex does not have a mobile phone, another friend of Rex's called Inland Fisheries Service and it was confirmed this was one of three fish released into Lake Leake as part of the Tagged Trout Promotion.

While speaking to Rex's wife Robin, to get details, she advised IFS to remind Rex that their 50th wedding anniversary was coming up and that the prize money was timely.

Congratulations to Rex and Len and Hilton for catching the second and third tagged brown trout of 50 released into 15 waters around Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Government doubled the potential prize pool to $100,000 this year and increased the number of waters to encourage people to get out and enjoy fishing in Tasmania, and to visit different waters.

These two catches follow the first tagged trout being caught earlier this month at the River Derwent.

The 15 waters and number of remaining tagged fish are: Arthurs Lake (5), yingina/Great Lake (5), Lake Mackintosh (5), Lake Pedder (5), Lake Burbury (5), Lake Rosemary (5), Derby's Briseis Mine Hole (2), Bronte Lagoon (2), Curries River Reservoir (2), Huntsman Lake (2), Lake Parangana (2), Lake Rowallan (2), River Derwent (2) and now 2 left at Lake Leake and 1 left at Craigbourne Dam.

The tags are orange and have unique identifying details.
