Two police officers assaulted, four charged, NSW

Two police officers have been assaulted after a fight in Surry Hills overnight, NSW Police say.

Around midnight (Sunday 27 May 2018), a number of people were allegedly involved in a fight at a licenced premises on Mary Street, Surry Hills.

Officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command attended and spoke with a number of people, who became increasingly aggressive toward police.

A leading senior constable was allegedly punched in the face by a 53-year-old man.

When officers came to assist, it will be alleged the man then punched a constable in the head.

A short struggle followed, during which police used OC spray to arrest the man.

Three other men, aged 55, 53 and 24, were also arrested at the scene, and all four men were taken to Surry Hills Police Station.

A 55-year-old man was charged with affray, resist officer in execution of duty and resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty.

A 53-year-old man was charged with assault officer in execution of duty (x2) and affray.

Another 53-year-old man was charged with common assault and a 24-year-old man was charged with affray.

All four men were granted conditional bail and will appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 21 June 2018.

The two male officers did not require medical treatment.
