Ukraine says Russian military breaks through border

Russian military has broken through the Ukrainian state border in the Kiev region, says Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs.

"In the Kyiv region, Russian troops broke through the state border. The enemy's military equipment entered through the Vilcha checkpoint. Border guards together with the Ukrainian military are repelling the incursion," the statement said.

There are reports that Russian tanks have entered Kharkhiv, Ukraine's second largest city.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky announced earlier that he will issue weapons to everyone who wants them.

More than 40 Ukrainian troops have been killed in Russian shelling, Ukrainian president's office said.

Multiple reports claim Russian military vehicles have breached the border in a number of places, in the north, south and east, including from Belarus.

After Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, Russian cruise missile strikes rained down on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, including residential apartment blocks deep inside Ukraine.
