The Mining and Energy Union welcomes the NSW Government's approval of the extension of the Ulan Coal Mine near Mudgee until 2035.
The approval allows the extraction of an additional 18.8 million tonnes of coal, adding two years to the lifespan of Ulan mine.
This decision provides certainty for workers, their families, and their community over the coming decade in the face of significant challenges.
Bob Timbs, the Mining and Energy Union South West District President, praised the New South Wales Government's decision as striking the right balance between environmental concerns and economic security.
"The New South Wales Government has made the sensible decision in choosing to extend the lifespan of Ulan mine. It has reassured hundreds of workers and their families that they, and their communities, will be supported over the next decade.
"The conditions implemented as part of the extension approval are reasonable, responsible and will allay many concerns about the extension.
"This approval reflects the continued strong demand for the Central West's high-quality thermal coal internationally, which underpin the energy security of our global trading partners."
