UNESCO Chief Denounces Guatemala Journalists' Murders

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the armed attack that claimed the lives of journalists Edin Alonzo and Hugo Gutiérrez in the town of Caballo Blanco, in the southwestern province of Retalhuleu in Guatemala, on 11 August.
I condemn the killings of Edin Alonzo and Hugo Gutiérrez. I urge the authorities to conduct a transparent investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Impunity for crimes must not be tolerated.

Edin Alonzo and Hugo Gutiérrez managed Noticias Caballo Blanco, a Facebook news page dedicated to local news, crime, politics and social issues. They were reportedly returning from a coverage assignment riding a motorcycle, when they were shot dead.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
