UNESCO Chief Denounces Journalist João Chamusse's Murder in Mozambique

Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist João Fernando Chamusse in KaTembe, in the province of Maputo, in Mozambique on 14 December 2023.

I condemn the killing of João Chamusse, and urge an investigation into the circumstances. Impunity for such crimes must not be tolerated and the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

João Chamusse was a veteran journalist, and the co-owner and editor of online newspaper Ponto por Ponto, as well as a commentator on TV Sucesso. Earlier in his career he had co-founded the Canal de Moçambique newspaper and had worked as a reporter at the Mediafax newspaper. He was killed outside of his home.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
