UNESCO Chief Denounces Journalist's Killing in Palestine

Khaled El-Enany, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Mohammed Washah in Gaza, Palestine on 8 April 2026.

I condemn the killing of Mohammed Washah and call for a thorough investigation. Journalists play a crucial role in informing the world and ensuring the local population's right to information. I call for the respect of UN Security Council Resolution 2222 unanimously adopted in 2015 on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel as civilians in situations of conflict, a status reaffirmed in the Pact for the Future.

Mohammed Washah worked as correspondent for international media outlet Al Jazeera.

UNESCO provides emergency assistance to journalists in the Gaza Strip, including psychosocial assistance, access to working equipment, and capacity-building. UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
